Reporting from the “Closing the Gap” initiative shows that, sadly, there is little change from last year in the outlook for Australian Aboriginal children. The target to halve the gap in child mortality is not on track (though there is some progress):
- Australian Aboriginal children have 2.4 times the mortality rate of non-indigenous children.
- A disproportionate number of Aboriginal children remain below national standards in literacy and numeracy
- The target to close the gap in life expectancy is not on track
TPA is working with The Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council to support children and those who care for them in remote, underserved Australian Aboriginal communities, initially in NSW, with clinical guidance and education.
